New MeSH terms for 2009

Ovid has just sent the announcement about new MeSH terms for 2009.  We now have MeSH headings for MP3 Player, Wandering Behavior, and Jewelry, among other, more medical, terms.  Does the new ‘Drug Users’ term mean that my search on the population ‘women who misuse drugs or alcohol’ of last November is less rigorous than it could be?

I am slightly surprised that they have not expanded their category of Cellular Phone, as we are now met with a huge range of smartphones, touch-sensitive phones and other do-dads.  Where is Social Networking and Text Messaging–neither a very new thing?  Somewhat embarrassing categories such as Telefacsimile and Radar still exist under the Telecommunications heading.

Why cannot MeSH, and indexing in general, be more forward-thinking rather than reactive (and slow to react, at that)?
